Emmanuel Rodriguez-Chaves

Emmanuel Rodriguez-Chaves (b. 1986) is a visual artist interested in reflecting on the use and interpretation of images through an expanded notion of painting and the creation of intermedial installations that he calls "scenarios." His work employs found images and objects that he subsequently manipulates to question the traditional use of the archive as a control mechanism.

His conceptual framework and theoretical engagements are deeply rooted in an interplay between image theory, diverse painting methodologies, and emerging media platforms. His work is entrenched in a non-linear art historical discourse that challenges and deconstructs imperial and colonial narratives, employing a global perspective to interrogate and illuminate local themes that resonate within historically marginalized narratives.

Since completing his PhD in 2021, he has engaged extensively in both academic and community-based settings. His work ranges from rigorous research in contemporary visual arts to leading innovative international educational initiatives in Costa Rica and internationally.

From mid-2023, together with fellow artists Montserrat Mesalles and Luciano Goizueta, Emmanuel Rodriguez-Chaves founded abra.espacio, an independent and experimental art project in San José, Costa Rica.
