Daniela Marten
Daniela Martén, a Costa Rican artist, studied at the School of Fine Arts at the University of Costa Rica and received independent training from Joaquín Rodríguez del Paso and Nelly Eyo.
Her work focuses on gender construction, the historical presence of women, and their position within social and cultural structures. She explores the influence of religion and syncretism in popular expressions and the construction of archetypes. She is also interested in sacredness as an inherent aspect of humanity and its connection to the universe. Her work examines the relationships between nature, erotic energy, and the sacred, redefining eroticism from a female and autonomous perspective that challenges stereotypical narratives.

Her artistic language combines vibrant, imaginary flowers and tropical references—both stereotypical and personal—with religious symbolism. Through this, she highlights the connection between the body, femininity, eroticism, nature, and sacredness, creating narratives that intentionally and irreverently intertwine the human, the vegetal, the animal, and the divine. She envisions a universe where the feminine and the natural hold a sacred place.
She won First Prize at the Croma Biennial in 2022, participated in the National Salon at the Costa Rican Art Museum that same year, and had her solo exhibition The Cutting Garden at Room57 Gallery in New York.
She has exhibited at the Cultural Center of Spain in Costa Rica and the Regional Museum of San Ramón. She was also an invited artist in the first exhibition of the feminist collective Casa Ma.
In 2023, she co-founded Queremos Pintar, an initiative aimed at bringing women painters to the forefront. She currently also manages Amante ArtLab, an independent studio space for artists.
She has had two solo exhibitions and two international exhibitions, in Los Angeles and New York.
